Welcome to Self-Care and Wellness. Lets start off by explaining what self-care really means. First off, it is important to note that self-care looks different for everybody. What works for someone may not necessarily work for you or vice versa and that is okay. Any effort which contributes to ones well-being can be considered self-care. Exercise, reading, meditation, gathering with friends, etc are all considered self-care.
Why is it important to take care of ourselves? How often do we do so? Many of us have forgotten to take care of ourselves due to the other taxing aspects of our lives which we prioritize ahead of ourselves. Jobs, school, children, friends, social media, etc. Although not always intentional, the energy exerted maintaining our lifestyles instead on our well-being can become detrimental to our mental, emotional, and physical health. This can hinder our potential and leave us truly lost.
Focusing on myself was difficult when I first recognized my overall health was deteriorating last year. It was easier for me at the time to prioritize my job and avoid addressing my problems because I felt there was no time to 'self-loathe". I felt the expectation to have my life "together" because if I could not help myself than how could I possibly help others? I was wrong in believing that my problems (which everybody has problems) were somehow indicative of my ability to work.
My passion was and continues to be helping others. It has become easier with focusing on my own self-care as it allows for me to regenerate and remember why I do what I do.
I look forward to sharing with you, reading your comments, and learning about some of your forms of self-care.

I greatly enjoyed reading your blog post on self care and wellness. In the midst of being a college student, new home owner, working a job, and recently married, the thought of self care blew out the window for me. I was overwhelmed, over loaded on things that needed to be done that sometimes, I'd forget the last time I even showered. For me, a long run, homemade dinner, warm bath, and an episode of my favorite show are a few of my favorite things to do. I become more relaxed, rejuvenated, and aware.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading this. I often sacrifice my mental health to try and keep up with a load of things I don't have time for, or shouldn't be doing. It was awesome to read this as it reminded me to slow down some. I often compromise my mental health to pretend like I have it all together, and it never works. I sometimes need a reminder, I'm really glad your article was that reminder.
